Iran President Promises “Prudent, Moderate” Annihilation of Israel

Rouhani at DavosDavos, Switzerland, January 23 – President Hassan Rouhani of Iran put forth a more diplomatic face today, telling reporters and dignitaries that his country would pursue its aims through a careful course of action, one of “constructive engagement” with the goal of destroying Israel.

Attending the World Economic Forum, Rouhani sought to calm observers, pledging that Iran has no intention of acquiring nuclear weapons to use against other countries. Such a commitment would not include refraining from the use of such technology against entities that his country refuses to recognize as countries, such as Israel. Rouhani’s conciliatory tone, implying the desired destruction of only one archenemy, provided a contrast with his predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was more blunt about Iran’s aims.

Accordingly, the centrifuges, heavy water reactor, and intercontinental missiles that Iran seeks, the hallmarks of an effort to develop atomic weapons, are part of what Rouhani calls his country’s path of “prudent moderation,” as are the shipments of arms and military advisers to parties currently involved in the bloody Syrian civil war. Addressing that conflict, the Iranian President told the audience, “Iran believes that all of us should try to put a stop to the bloodshed,” presumably referring to an unwavering commitment to supplying Syrian President Basher Assad’s forces with the ability to continue massacring civilians.

Similarly, what he called “improved relations with all the world” can only be achieved by continuing to arm and train Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite militant organization whose involvement in Syria’s internal conflict has spilled over violently into Lebanon.

Rouhani insisted on Iran’s right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful uses such as electricity production, medical isotope manufacture, and Jew immolation. “The Iranian people are not willing to give up their peaceful technology,” he stated.
