Some admitted greater insult at the absence of Palestine solidarity than had the group expressed explicitly Zionist sensibilities.
New York, September 10 – Progressives voiced confusion tinged with shock and outrage today upon discovering that an advocacy group focused on pedestrian safety has never put forth a statement condemning Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, and in fact appears to have made no pronouncement at all on Israel or the Palestinians in the association’s entire eight-year existence.
Safety First Street, a not-for-profit association that lobbies and petitions Nassau County, Long Island officials to install and maintain traffic signals, has issued not a single statement, press release, or other materials decrying Israel, focusing instead on preventing a recurrence of the hit-and-run that killed an eight-year-old at the intersection of Westminster Avenue and First Street in Garden City in 2011. The complete lack of such a statement has perplexed numerous social justice warriors, whose field of endeavor features the unwritten rule that all advocacy causes must link and subordinate themselves to fighting for Palestinian rights.
“It took me some time to notice it,” confessed Ali Abunimah, who runs the anti-Israel propaganda site Electronic Intifada. “I’ve taken for granted all this time that any NGO serious about its mission hitches itself to the Palestinian cause, or, more accurately, allows the Palestinian cause to be hitched to it. This is like a slap in the face, though, almost as shocking as the normalization between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.”
Some admitted feeling greater insult at the absence of Palestine solidarity from Safety First Street than they would had the group expressed any explicitly Zionist sensibilities. “I hate Zionists, yes, but at the very least with Zionists there’s someone who at least has you in mind,” explained Black Lives Matter Manhattan-area coordinator Warren Wilhelm, Jr. “This is somehow worse, as if the progressive cause par excellence, the one movement to which all who want real change must show fealty to be included in the Good Guys club, doesn’t register with them. If there’s one thing the Palestinian cause has always been about, it’s being the center of attention, and of course the funding and entrée for Palestinian leaders that attention entails.”
Activists plan to hold a pair of simultaneous demonstrations and protest march this Saturday at both the First-Westminster intersection and the Safety First Street headquarters at the home of the deceased child’s parents, to demand the association express support for Palestine and denounce Israeli crimes. So far the effort to pin down a time and program have failed because the planners have not found a synagogue anywhere near the protest site to deface.
