“Everyone knows how absurd that would be.”
Gaza City, March 11 – Supporters and members of the Islamist terrorist group that governs the Gaza Strip reminded global media today that the ratio of less than one noncombatant Palestinian death for each combatant death in the Gaza fighting – a never-before-achieved threshold showing unprecedented care and precision only to target fighters – means nothing, because, as with all matters Palestinian, the facts have no importance when accusing Israel.
Hamas spokesmen and pro-Hamas personalities issued posts and pronouncements Tuesday stressing that getting hung up on such irrelevant notions as “facts” and “objective figures” plays into the hands of the Zionists, and urged the public and news media to ignore any indications that the Israeli military had achieved the lowest noncombatant-to-combatant death ratio in the history of modern warfare even according to UN statistics.
“We urge everyone not to be taken in by such vile, deceptive ideas as ‘facts’ and ‘truth’,” Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida stated. “The UN’s figures, that the typical ratio is about nine to one, cannot be accepted, as that would, by comparison, make the 0.9:1 ratio in the recent Gaza fighting a stunning military achievement, and would thus paint the Zionist forces as somehow moral. Everyone knows how absurd that would be.”
Aside from propagandists, most reputable sources place the total number of deaths in the Gaza Strip during the war that began on October 7, 2023 with a Hamas invasion of Israel at somewhere in the neighborhood of forty thousand, just over half of them fighters or personnel from Hamas and allied jihadist militant groups. The figures remain approximate because Hamas has sought to portray all the deaths as civilian casualties, including many civilians killed by Hamas booby traps and missile misfires.
Such a low number of civilian deaths relative to combatants bests by a significant margin even a previous benchmark set by US-led coalition forces during a siege and bombardment of Mosul, Iraq – under five noncombatants for each combatant. But allowing such accurate figures to gain currency in reportage of the Gaza war concedes some moral high ground to Israel, an arena in which Hamas and its allies seek the actual victory, regardless of how many Palestinian civilian lives it costs.
To help bolster skepticism regarding numbers that every credible source takes as factual or as close to accurate as possible, Hamas and its allies have sought the experience and assistance of Holocaust deniers, whose knack for dismissing, disregarding, or simply yelling, “Nuh-UH!” at documented facts can also help shore up Hamas’s position on the media stage.
