Gaza City, July 23 – An investigation of one of the world’s foremost refugee organizations has discovered that instead of making the care and proper resettlement of refugees its priority, the group has instead used its access to those refugees to harvest blood, and occasionally organs, for wounded Israeli soldiers, according to an international law-enforcement group.
An four-year Interpol investigation completed last month points to cynical Israeli manipulation and propping up of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, or UNRWA as it is more commonly known. The burgeoning Palestine refugee population, while seen by many as a political time bomb, has in fact been primarily an increasingly reliable source of blood transfusions for IDF soldiers. UNRWA administers 58 recognized camps for the millions of descendants of 700,000 Palestinian Arabs who fled their homes before or during the 1948 war that followed Israel’s declaration of statehood, but any proper refugee organization would have resettled all of those refugees in short order instead of keeping them stateless and dependent.
Given the lack of logic and constructive purpose in UNRWA, international experts believe it should have been dismantled long ago and its refugees absorbed into the national entities hosting the camps: Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and, since 1993, the Palestinian Authority. While political factors partially account for those entities’ refusal to grant Palestinian refugees citizenship and disband UNRWA, the organization’s persistence and robustness is more adequately explained by the benefit Israel derives from it, say Interpol officials.
“Israel cooperates with UNRWA and facilitates UNRWA activities far in excess of one would expect, given the hostility of UNRWA refugees for Israel,” said an investigator who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We found that the only adequate explanation for this is that Israel, without the knowledge or consent of some five million Palestine refugees, has been exploiting the agency as a front to take blood from those refugees to use in treating wounded fighters.” The official explained that under the cover of free medical care and treatment, Palestinians have unwittingly been providing the IDF with hundreds of thousands of units of blood each year and allowing the IDF much greater flexibility and combat resilience as a result.
The clandestine nature of the operations is such that even high-ranking UN personnel within and outside UNRWA have been unaware of its existence despite the decades it has been running. “We don’t know exactly what year it began, but we do know that as of 1975 there were UNRWA-marked refrigerated airlifts of blood from Palestinian refugees in Lebanon being sent to Cyprus, and from there to Tel Aviv,” said the official. “In at least seventy cases, as well, UNRWA medical personnel – whether knowingly employed by the Mossad or acting innocently – removed kidneys, livers, lungs, skin, and other organs, all of which ended up transplanted in Israeli patients.”
UNRWA officials have denied the validity of the claims, but first paused, as if waiting for instructions, as they looked at a mysterious man in the back of the room.
