The Clintons’ daughter Chelsea was not in the vicinity of the explosion and was not harmed.
New York, September 18 – A bomb detonated in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood Saturday, leading Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to voice her assessment that her daughter Chelsea was the intended victim.
Ms. Clinton made the remark at a campaign event, telling supporters this was not the first time she or her family had been targeted with violence, referencing a trip to the former Yugoslavia where she said her aircraft had landed “under fire.”
The explosion injured dozens, including one critically, and a second device was found nearby, an improvised bomb that used a pressure cooker and a cellular phone. Police have yet to confirm a motive or the identities of any suspects, but have not ruled out terrorism. The Clintons’ daughter Chelsea, who resides in Manhattan, was not in the vicinity of the explosion and was not harmed.
“Whoever it was was probably targeting my daughter,” declared the candidate. “It wouldn’t be the first time the enemies of democratic values and the Democratic Party have resorted to potentially deadly means to bring down a member of this family one way or another. No, Mr. Trump, I’m not going to relinquish my bodyguards with your basket of deplorables out there and ready to commit heinous crimes such as this one.” Republican candidate Donald Trump had suggested Ms. Clinton suspend her Secret Service protection, in a remark widely considered a “dog whistle” statement meant to incite radical right-wing followers.
The younger Clinton, whose marriage to Jewish investment banker Marc Mezvinsky has had the antisemitic alt-right buzzing for years, was unavailable for comment. A family fRiend who asked not to be identified expressed puzzlement at the selection of Chelsea Clinton-Mezvinsky as a target, since Trump’s daughter also married a Jew, and even underwent an Orthodox conversion to do so. “I just don’t get it,” said the friend. “Nothing about this attack makes sense. I mean, unless Hillary was being, shall we say, less than literal, which of course never happens.”
Security experts on the Clinton campaign payroll did not discount the possibility of Chelsea Clinton as the target. “Certain elements of Republican base have been trying to bring down the Clintons forever,” said one. “Gennifer Flowers. Whitewater. Lewinsky. Souha Arafat. They’ve latched onto every little atrocity Bill or Hillary have ever committed, and I wouldn’t put it past them to start going outside the media and legal system to thwart them. By the standards of evidence employed by many of those ‘activists,’ the coincidence of the Chelsea-Chelsea connection is practically a slam dunk.”
