Media Keep Assuming First Lady’s Gender

“It seems the so-called progressive media reserve their progressive attitude only for those in the same part of the political spectrum as they.”

Melania TrumpWashington, April 27 – Associates of Melania Trump complained today of the consistent trend in reporting on the president’s wife to assume he or she is female.

The First Lady, who married Donald Trump in 2005, has not officially informed any media outlets of his or her gender identity as such, observed White House staff, and they characterized the media’s treatment of his/her identity as contrary to the prevailing ethos prevailing otherwise in media to show sensitivity and openness, and not to impose preconceived notions on the other.

“I’m not sure when exactly it started, but it’s disturbing,” lamented a West Wing staffer who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Whether Melania Trump identifies as female, male, some combination of the two, or something else entirely, is his or her business and no one else’s unless he or she states otherwise. The press has shown remarkable hypocrisy on this point, a development that calls into question whether outlets that pride themselves on a progressive outlook in fact adhere to those principles.”

“I’d expect Fox News and Breitbart to just go with ‘female’ and be done with it,” added Ann Drahjinis, who teaches courses in mass media analysis at Johns Hopkins University. “But MSNBC, Salon, Slate, Mother Jones, and who knows how many other news operations that are decidedly liberal have demonstrated no awareness that perhaps the First Lady treats that title only as a title, an honorific, but not in its literal sense. It seems the so-called progressive media reserve their progressive attitude only for those in the same part of the political spectrum as they. Is it any wonder the president keeps dismissing their hypocritical coverage as fake news?”

The First Lady him or herself has not weighed in publicly on the matter, a move that insiders attribute to his or her wish to maintain a semblance of privacy. “For a while, Melania Trump considered not living in the White House at all, preferring to remain in Trump Tower in New York,” recalled Jen Derr of The New Yorker. “Considering the insensitivity and invasiveness of the coverage to date, who can blame her or him?”

Public figure Rachel Dolezal offered support for the First Lady. “However you want to identify is how people should treat you, Melania,” she urged. “Gender is as much a social construct as race, so do not be discouraged by the ignorant assumptions the media are making about you. You go, girl or boy or whatever.”
