Jeroboam Quits Judah To Form Yet Another Political Party

Several disgruntled former administration officials have joined the nascent movement, including a number from Jeroboam’s tribe of Ephraim.

microphonesShechem, October 22 – Israel’s fractured political scene continued its fragmentation today as a former Solomon administration official announced the formation of a new political party separate from the governing faction in Judah.

Jeroboam, son of Nebat, an Ephramite, told a gathering of supporters that the time had come to move the country in new directions, but that the current administration of Rehoboam, son of Solomon, has proved incapable of implementing the necessary policy changes. He, instead, has formed a new political entity that he contends would better reflect the will of the people.

“We hereby declare the formation of the Northern Kingdom Party,” pronounced the charismatic leader, once a fugitive in Egypt from Solomon’s enforcers, wanted for conspiracy and sedition. “We invite all who have grown weary of the burdensome policies of the current leadership and its sense of entitlement to join us.”

Jeroboam’s new party constitutes but the latest in an ongoing trend of former administration officials or insiders setting out to form independent parties, both because of dissatisfaction with the prevailing leadership and because of a desire to claim the mantle they believe they should wear. He joins figures such as Absalom, Moshe Dayan, Tzipi Livni, and Anan Ben-David.

Observers are reserving judgment on the prospects of the Northern Kingdom Party. “All these announcements feature the same fanfare, but it takes time to determine whether it was all sound and fury, or there’s something there,” explained Ahija the Shilonite, who analyzes political movements in the United Monarchy. “Jeroboam certainly has the connections and the administrative experience, but whether he can generate a significant enough following to gain real political clout remains to be seen.”

Several disgruntled former administration officials have joined the nascent movement, including a number from Jeroboam’s tribe of Ephraim. In interviews, the Northern Kingdom activists railed against what they called the oppressive taxation, wasteful infrastructure spending, and other excesses of the Jerusalem-centered monarchy, and promised that the political and economic periphery beyond the confines of Judah and Benjamin tribal territories would benefit from a government under their aegis.

Rehoboam administration officials dismissed Jeroboam’s announcement as little more than a nuisance. “He’s the entitled one,” charged a palace representative. “Any proper citizen of this kingdom would know his place. The people should know better than to follow such an upstart, especially when there’s so much work remaining on our construction projects, and those projects won’t be funded or staffed if they don’t shut their whiny mouths and get back to work.”
