Ben-Gvir: Moving Gazans Out Not Ethnic ‘Cleansing’ Because Place Will Still Be Filthy

“Though, again, everyone knows I wouldn’t have a problem with that, per se.”

Jerusalem, February 11 – A right-wing legislator who quit his government ministry over Israel’s acceptance of the current ceasefire and hostage/prisoner release agreement between Israel and Hamas weighed in on US President Donald Trump’s insistence that Palestinians in the millions be given the opportunity to move out of the ruins: he denied opponents’ accusations that the proposal constitutes “ethnic cleansing,” because, as he noted, “cleansing” is a wholly unsuitable term when the territory will remain plenty dirty even if all the Palestinians leave.

Former Minister for Public Security Itamar Ben-Gvir welcomed Trump’s rhetoric about the Gaza Strip last week, in which the president asserted the need to move nearly all of the territory’s residents out to other countries so that Israel can root out Hamas once and for all, and then international projects to rebuild may begin. Ben-Gvir, who represents the rightmost faction in the Knesset, dismissed widespread condemnation of Trump’s idea, referring to the notion of clearing out Palestinians from Gaza in terms of ethnic cleansing as “laughable.”

“First of all, Palestinian isn’t an ethnicity,” he began. “So that’s entirely the wrong term to use to begin with. Second of all, only the plan’s critics assume it would be permanent, though I, personally, would favor that. Obviously. Third of all, it’s for their own safety and prosperity, so it’s not right to refer to it in terms that conjure up deportations and conquest – though, again, everyone knows I wouldn’t have a problem with that, per se.”

“No, what makes it dishonest to use the term ‘ethnic cleansing,'” he continued, “is the fact that it wouldn’t ‘cleanse’ a single bit of the territory. Have you seen the level of filth and squalor there, even before October 7? It would take years of scouring to get the place even close to ‘cleansed’ by any reasonable measure. But the Islamist-loving media-NGO-Western-government rhetorical ecosystem has never shown the slightest bit of honesty when discussing Israel, so no one should be surprised.”

When informed of Ben-Gvir’s comments, Trump remarked, “Ben who? I know Benjamin Netanyahu. Whoever this other guy his, I don’t know who he is, could be some nobody – but he’s right about the media. Very dishonest. They should be ashamed of themselves. The media needs a good cleansing. If this Ben-Gvir guy has nothing to do in Bibi’s government anymore, as I’m first hearing just now, he can come work with Elon Musk in DOGE. He seems to know what cleansing things means.”
