Like Palestinians and their supporters, they lack any capacity for self-reflection.
Tel Aviv, December 4 – An unhinged social media post by a pro-Palestinian propagandist, accusing Israel of using a secret superweapon to make Palestinian bodies simply disappear, also prompted some of the Israeli prime minister’s fiercest ideological foes to find the weapon’s existence compelling, since it offers them a way to blame him for their steady, disastrous electoral decline without having to entertain the threatening notion that their own ideas, policies, attitudes, rhetoric, and failures made any substantive contribution to that decline.
Officials in The Democrats Party – a merger of Meretz, a stalwart of the Israeli left, and Labor, a remnant of the party that founded and led Israel for its first three decades – noticed a post on X by “journalist” Hossam Shabat that attempted to reconcile talk of high civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip with the much, much lower figure for documented dead in the territory. In the November 30 post, Shabat cites “first responders” reporting that Israeli weapons have vaporized Palestinian casualties.
The post led them to the realization that because, like Palestinians and their supporters, they lack any capacity for self-reflection and recognition of their own errors – though they can point with ease to others’ failings, real or imagined – someone else must bear the blame for the contraction of Israel’s Left from its kingmaker status in the 1990’s into the footnote it has become – with Meretz failing to make it into the Knesset at all in one recent round of elections, and Labor – at its height holding more than forty seats in the 120-member Knesset – barely managing to scrape together a handful of seats. Obviously, then, Binyamin Netanyahu has been vaporizing the voters who would otherwise have restored the Left to power.
The current Opposition features The Democrats as a merger of the two flagship “Zionist left” parties intended to keep both from falling below the electoral threshold. That stopgap measure, however, only suffices to stave off electoral wipeout – but not to address the fundamental issues standing in the way of a return to power. Those issues include widespread disillusionment in Israel with the tenets of the Left’s position on granting Palestinians self-rule and on surrendering territorial control to elements sworn to Israel’s destruction; the disillusionment has only increased following waves of deadly Palestinian violence that left thousands dead and many more injured, displaced, and broken. But acknowledging that the catastrophically flawed premise of their defining geopolitical idea, that Land-for-Peace will work with the Palestinians, represents the principal failing of their political worldview, requires more courage and honesty than they can muster – and, therefore, have resorted, like the Palestinians, to delusional libel dressed up as humanitarian concern.
