Crucial pieces of information on how she maintains her dark coif.
Tel Aviv, June 30 – Aggressive, independent reporters continued to hold to account those in power today, with an investigative piece on the country’s leading evening TV news magazine about the hair care regimen of Israel’s Minister of Transportation.
Hard-nosed journalism from Haaretz, Channel 12, and Israel Army Radio brought Tuesday night’s Mabat viewers an unprecedented look into Merav Michaeli’s choices of shampoo, conditioner, and dyes, with no-holds-barred inquiries challenging the minister, currently chairwoman of the Labor Party, with question after question about lather, scent, repetition, frequency, brands, and other crucial pieces of information on how she maintains her dark coif. Industry observers noted the contrast between the antagonistic relationship of the previous government, under Likud’s Binyamin Netanyahu, and the more accommodating attitude of the current ministers, which allows Israeli citizens access to information to which they had less access for the previous twelve years.
The Mabat item followed on the heels of footage, widely-distributed last week and the week before, of Michaeli’s trips on various forms of transportation, such as on a train and bicycle, allowing Israelis to sense that unlike other Minsters of Transportation, this one knows how to take a train or ride a bicycle. Such reports in turn followed photos of Michaeli bidding farewell to workers at her previous office, without which Israeli voters would lack important civic information.
“We’re just doing our job,” stated a modest Dana Weiss, one of the country’s leading journalists and a contributor to the Michaeli hair care regimen report. “Asking the tough questions of the people who hold power is something we’ve been doing for a long time. Because of our work, Israelis can make proper decisions in the voting booth about the people whose policies affect them.” Weiss expressed the hope that perhaps soon a reporter will work up the courage to ask Minister Michaeli about her actual policies, and perhaps even dig past the sound bites and clichés that issue from her.
Some journalists voiced confusion over the transformation of some government figures. “It seems that overnight, once this new non-Netanyahu government began to emerge, certain people went from far-right racist homophobes to complex, but ultimately sympathetic leaders who deserve patience and understanding as they settle into their new roles,” observed broadcast journalist Kalman Liebskind. “I almost got whiplash from it – their transformation is nothing less than remarkable – and all it appears to take is choosing the right team. Who knew such a fundamental ideological and moral change could take place so quickly?”
