“Gush Katif can again cement itself as pioneers in clean produce production.”
Jerusalem, November 6 – Inflammatory, irresponsible rhetoric of a government minister – suggesting the destruction via atomic weapons of the Hamas-controlled coastal territory from which the organization has launched murderous, barbaric attacks on Israel – has prompted some activists, who see Israel’s recapture of the Gaza Strip as an opportunity to reestablish communities uprooted there in 2005, to look for positive ramifications of just such an atomic scenario: leverage the name that those settlements generated for themselves with the mass-production of hydroponic, reduced-pest leafy greens – but this time exploiting the post-detonation radioactivity to achieve those results.
Minister of Heritage Amihai Eliyahu of the far-right Otzma Yehudit Party stated over the weekend that Israel should “nuke Gaza” or otherwise force its Palestinian inhabitants to leave, as a way of ensuring the Strip can no longer serve as a base from which to launch attacks on Israel. The deadliest attack by far took place on October 7, resulting in 1400 dead, thousands wounded, an unknown number of women tortured and raped, people beheaded and immolated, and 244 captives of all ages and sexes abducted into the Gaza Strip from southern Israel. Otzma Yehudit already had a reputation for extremist positions, but the flagrant advocacy of genocide caused even Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu of the center-right Likud Party to suspend Eliyahu from his duties.
However, Avner Odesser, whose family was forcibly evacuated from his community in the Gaza Strip in August 2005, along with thousands of other Israelis living in the territory, views the nuclear option as compatible with the reconstitution of at least one of the revenue-generating enterprises that the pre-Disengagement featured, and which could make resettlement of the “Katif Bloc” of communities – Gush Katif – viable.
“Gush Katif earned itself a reputation for bug-free produce,” he recalled. “As everyone can now see, the Disengagement from Gaza failed. It failed to bring peace. It failed to bring security. It failed to show any positive outcome for giving concessions to terrorists. And now we must fix that catastrophic error. We can rebuild Gush Katif in the original Gush Katif once the place is nuked to oblivion, and we can leverage the ionizing radiation that the blast – or blasts – will generate. That radiation can be used to kill the bugs that would otherwise infest the lettuce, broccoli, and other leafy vegetables. Gush Katif can again cement itself as pioneers in clean produce production.”
The concern for pests goes beyond the ick factor or attrition of salable product, explained Odesser. “Jewish law forbids the consumption of insects or their larvae. Katif produce reduced or eliminated the need to soak leafy greens in soapy water, or in vinegar, and then rinsing, to remove the bugs. It’s such a convenient option that some Rabbinic organizations that certify restaurants as kosher insist that only Katif or Katif-type greens are acceptable, because it saves the supervisors tons of work. Irradiation would provide even more possibilities and volume, increasing supply – and the radiation will already be there, requiring no additional investment.
