Part of the decision, explained adviser Ben Rhodes, was based on the prospect of Trump prioritizing the welfare and happiness of his daughter Ivanka’s family.
Washington, January 19 – Among the last moves made by the departing president was the decision not to pack his copy of the self-help book How to Backstab the Jew for Profit, by former Secretary of State James Baker, electing instead to leave it behind for use by the incoming chief executive.
Barack Obama finished packing the vast majority of his possessions last week for his departure from the White House and the presidency, but remained torn about several items, unable to reach an unequivocal conclusion whether taking them with him or letting Donald Trump enjoy them would be wiser. In the end, said aides, Obama realized Trump’s need for the book’s perspective and guidance far exceeds his own, and he did not pack it.
Part of the decision, explained adviser Ben Rhodes, was based on the prospect of Trump prioritizing the welfare and happiness of his daughter Ivanka’s family, a value that the outgoing president assumed could only be outweighed by the profit motive. “Mr. Trump’s devotion to maximizing revenue came long before his daughter was even born, let alone converted to Judaism,” he noted. “It’s a much deeper value to him. That being the case, the president welcomed a way to expose his successor to modes of thinking in which the latter’s evident greed can be used to inspire anti-Israel and antisemitic policies that he would otherwise never consider.”
Another factor in favor of leaving the book behind involved Obama’s proven expertise in the subject. “Maybe eight years ago the president would have consulted How to Backstab regularly, but at this point he could probably write it himself, and maybe better than the original,” explained Josh Earnest. “He’s a terrific writer, after all. The best. If he published that book now, it would be huge.”
Aides reported that Obama was waiting until the very last minute to decide on the disposition of several other White House items. “It isn’t very practical for him to take his display case full of aborted fetuses,” noted Rhodes. “Expense and delicate handling weren’t an issue for a man of the president’s means, obviously, but the First Lady refused to allow it in their new home, so no final decision has been forthcoming.”
“Under other circumstances the president would leave it to his Republican successor without hesitation,” added Rhodes, “but Trump isn’t very good at taking a joke. Also, it would reduce the likelihood that Trump would ever pick up this book that the president really, really wants him to read.”
