Still 0 Confirmed Attending Gaza SlutWalk Event

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” stated a burkha-clad woman shooting fearful looks at her husband. “Please go away.”

Gaza City, August 15 – Two weeks after activists posted a scheduled demonstration on behalf of women’s rights and against patriarchal dominance, no Facebook users have registered their intention to participate, organizers are reporting.

SlutWalk Gaza, slated to take place in three weeks, appears not to have attracted attendees, though organizers warn that numbers gleaned only through Facebook’s RSVP system often prove deceptive.

“We of course anticipate bountiful attendance, considering how much solidarity our movement has shown Palestinians,” insisted Annie Frekha, who also helped organize SlutWalk Chicago. “You’d think that after standing firm on the marginalization of Zionist feminists from our ranks, we might find a receptive venue in Palestine to hold another rally.”

While no Facebook users have confirmed they will attend, the event has garnered more than fifty Likes, a development that Frekha sees as an encouraging sign. “Not everyone uses Facebook the same way,” she explained. “In many ways a Like is as good as an ‘attending.'” A closer examination of those who clicked Like revealed more than half to be accounts run by or representing SlutWalk organizers themselves.

No venue has been announced for SlutWalk Gaza. “We’re waiting to see how many confirm,” indicated Hippo Critt, another organizer. “One thing is for sure – in Gaza we won’t need to carry umbrellas to obscure any attendees who have the gall to assert their pro-Israel sentiments.”

“Gaza is a fitting choice for us, when you get down to it,” she added. “I’m actually surprised we hadn’t thought of it before. With so much overlap in our status as victims of oppression, Palestinians and women are natural allies. Whatever the reasons for that oversight in the past, I’m sure this even will mark a true flowering of the potential partnership our movements can generate. Synergy is the name of the game.”

In Gaza, locals declined to comment on the upcoming event. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” stated a burkha-clad woman shooting fearful looks at her husband. “Please go away.”

“A Facebook event? Isn’t Facebook owned by a Jew?” seconded her sister-wife. “No thank you.”

A spokesman for Hamas, the Islamist movement that governs the Gaza Strip, offered to locate a venue for the SlutWalk. “We have no shortage of places to have these Westerners convene,” he pronounced, pointing to a rocket-propelled-grenade stockpile in a school. “They won’t mind terribly if we provoke an Israeli military strike and use them as human shields.”
