“Please respect our daughter’s privacy at this difficult time.”
Jerusalem, December 22 – Relatives and friends gathered today to console a local ninth-grader who underwent the catastrophic experience today of having to transfer accumulated kitchen garbage from its receptacle in that location to a dumpster on the main road a hundred paces away to await collection, and then also to replace the bag lining said receptacle, after having performed that task already less than seven days ago.
Zohara Benayun, 14, remained confined to her bedroom in the city’s Nahlaot neighborhood Wednesday following the traumatic episode, according to siblings and classmates. Witnesses described a horrific scene in which the blameless teen, the third in a family of six children, faced a parental demand to take out the trash for the second time since last Wednesday, when everyone knows it’s totally unfair and besides you NEVER ask anyone else to ANYTHING.
“Please respect our daughter’s privacy at this difficult time,” the adolescent’s parents admonished journalists who gathered near the family home. “Her difficulty will only compound with public attention.”
One family friend disclosed that the emotional impact of the disaster served as but one factor in a cluster of overlapping near-apocalyptic events. “She had two exams at school in the same week,” explained a neighbor. “THE. SAME. WEEK. That would be enough to render any of us non-functional. But then she also couldn’t find her favorite sweatshirt this morning, and her shoes were under the living room couch instead of in the middle of the floor where she’d left them so she could see them, like they’d been kicked there, probably on purpose, just to make her life impossible, and then she gets ordered to take out the garbage not once, but twice in seven days? I’m surprised she even lasted this long without a total nervous breakdown.”
People on the fringes of the incident discussed rumors that the current tragedy reflects merely the latest injustice in a protracted set of disputes between Zohara and her parents, who hold all of the power and feel like they can just make demands without granting her any of the privileges she genuinely wants, such as staying out as late as she wants, getting up as late as she wants, and having all of her clothes laundered as if by magic, instead forcing her to settle for such crumbs as having her own smartphone, letting her go almost anywhere as long as she informs them for how long, and providing her with spending money, all necessary food, shelter, and hygiene resources.
